There's no telling how many of these are tucked away in sheds around the world...The bike in this picture is an authentic 1965 Schwinn Stingray. Of course it looks nothing like it did in the 1960s; a healthy dose of BMX Fever appears to have overcome a previous owner, who set it up for some heavy duty dirt riding.
When BMX started around 1969, Stingrays were the bike. Nothing else held up like a Stingray back then; even as late as 1977 I remember friends retrofitting old Stingrays to ride in the dirt. When original Schwinns started growing in collector value, I started seeing a lot fewer of the old dirt warriors around since many people were restoring and reselling them to people trying to reclaim their youth.
Despite a bent fork (a true mark of dirt distinction), it's nice to see this one survived as a rider for a while. It sold on Craigslist recently, for a mere $40.
